The German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has given its support to the candidacy of Spanish Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, to preside over the Eurogroup. In an interview with the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, he pointed out that "it is not a secret that Calviño has the backing of the German government."
However, he recalled that "the final decision must be made by the Eurogroup". If chosen, Calviño would be the first Spanish and the first woman to head the Eurogroup. Merkel has not wanted to miss this last detail and has remarked that I am always happy "when a woman assumes a position of political leader".
The Government of Spain formalized this Thursday Calviño's candidacy to fill the vacant position after the resignation of Mário Centeno, who left the position as Portugal's Minister of Finance earlier this month and automatically ceased as president of the Eurogroup. The head of the Economy portfolio starts as a clear favorite, but she will need 10 supports among the 19 ministers who make up the body.
MERKEL CALLS FOR SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE AFFECTED BY COVID
In the interview, Merkel has also emphasized the need to carry out "an extraordinary act of solidarity" with the European countries most affected by the Covid-19 crisis, among which is Spain. In his opinion, this pandemic is "a challenge of unprecedented dimensions", which is why he has asked that the countries that make up the European Union (EU) form "a united front in the world".
He has also stated that the reconstruction fund valued at € 500 billion which he has proposed together with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, is "a special response to a special situation".
