Amazon close to accepting cryptocurrency payments?

Every now and then, a job post will trigger a flurry of rumors in the crypto space as industry watchers want to know if a new mega-corporation like Apple or Facebook is ready to adopt cryptocurrency payments.

That happened today with Amazon, which recently included a job post for a blockchain and digital currency product leader to create a vision and roadmap for new payment products.

A later statement shared with Crypto report and other outlets by an Amazon spokesperson fanned the flames by suggesting that the world's largest online retailer is actively considering enabling cryptocurrency payments.

“We are inspired by the innovation that is happening in the cryptocurrency space and we are exploring what this might look like on Amazon. We believe that the future will be built on new technologies that enable modern, fast and affordable payments, and we look forward to bringing that future to Amazon customers as soon as possible. "

"Explore" can mean many things to a large company with almost unlimited resources and thousands of employees. In particular, according to the job posting, the blockchain and digital currency product leader must have experience in cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies, and distributed ledgers. The new hire is also expected to "get leadership involvement and investment in new skills" and develop a "launch strategy." All of which suggests that the company is seriously looking at what cryptocurrencies can offer.

Amazon has made incremental steps in crypto in the past.

Earlier this month, Amazon Web Services, the subsidiary of the company's cloud platform, announced a Product Manager for its long-running Amazon Managed Blockchain, which handles hosting and hardware for developers looking to build. Hyperledger Fabric or Ethereum. In particular, the post indicated a preference for applicants with decentralized finance (DeFi) expertise, suggesting that AWS could be developing new capabilities for protocols that leverage a blockchain to offer middleman-free financial products.

Amazon's Advertising FinTech team has also been looking for a senior software engineer, as he works on "accounting, billing and reconciliation systems to bring transparency to transnational financial data." Although the post doesn't mention "blockchain," the URL does.
